There, he meets small time criminals such as Mataichi of Deception; Ogin of the Puppets; and Nagamimi of the Bird Calling.

They are secretive gang, hired to solve cases that are buried in darkness.

Searching out the criminal, using skilfull contrivances, they judge the human ego and bury one job after another; along with a mysterious sound of ringing bells and the word "Go Koui Tatematsuru" (probably means "I shall do this" in really old, refined Japanese)

      • EP1 - The Red Bean Washer

Momosuke Yamaoka, a writer of riddle books for children, wants to compile a book of 100 ghost stories. He is caught in a rain storm while on business in the mountains and meets the spiritualist Mataichi, who advises him to leave for his own safety. Momosuke proceeds anyway and seeks shelter at a rundown shop. He encounters a monk named Enkai and Ogin. Enkai was a former apprentice who suffers delusions of hearing the sound of red beans being washed. Mataichi later arrives at the inn. The shopkeeper Tokuemon shares the story of his beloved apprentice boy Yasuke who was murdered by his previous clerk Tatsugoro; the boy's soul now haunts the place as an Azukiarai. The story greatly affects Enkai. Later on Mataichi, Ogin, and Nagamimi (disguised as Tokuemon) stoke Enkai's emotions which sends into a breakdown. Enkai confesses that he murdered the apprentice boy several years earlier out of rage because Tokuemon wanted to make the boy his heir rather than himself. He dies soon after and his body found in the nearby river, where Mataichi commits Enkai's soul to the next world. When Momosuke finds Mataichi, Ogin, and Nagamimi, he learns that they are the Ongyou. Mataichi warns Momosuke to keep his distance from them, after which they vanish leaving Momosuke.

      • EP2 - Willow Woman

Momosuke goes to Kichibe's Willow Inn to know more of the rumored Yanagi Onna that haunts the place. It is believed she is in love with Kichibe the innkeeper, who will soon to marry his fifth bride, Yae. The rumor says that the Yanagi Onna murdered the innkeeper's previous wives and children out of jealousy. Momosuke encounters the Ongyo: Mataichi and Ogin at the inn. The wedding ceremony goes as planned, but afterwards the Ongyo use their talents to force Kichibe to confront the Yanagi Onna spirit. It is revealed that the spirit is in fact the split persona of Kichibe's, created in response to the burden of his family responsibilities and the prospect of being discarded once an heir is born. Kichibe is sliced in half by the willow tree's branches soon after as Mataichi commits Kichibe's soul to the next world. Yae gives birth shortly to a son. Momosuke looks in disgust at how Kichibe's relatives pressured him to give birth to an heir and concludes that they are the real reason for Kichibe's demise.
