「おれは本当の故郷を、この目でたしかめたいんだ」（ダリフ）
イギリスのある町でルンルンからパンをぬすんだダリフ少年は、アフリカのモロッコに古くから住むベルベル人の子どもでした。イギリスで生まれ、両親を事故でうしなった彼は、まだ見ぬ故郷へ帰ろうとしていました。ところが、苦労してお金をためて買ったモロッコ行きの船の切符が、警察に没収されてしまったのです。
