Unable to find Rosemary, Nadja writes to Headmistress Applefield for help when José drops by with a bouquet; after Nadja finishes and mails her letter, José explains that he was the protégé of a matador, Manolo, when Carmén arrived. Nadja suggests that Carmén needs more flamenco lessons, and José complains that Carmén is high-maintenance and has lost much of her stamina; he ends their engagement, deciding to travel.
