Akaza is a member of the Twelve Demon Moons, holding the position of Upper Moon Three. He is often depicted as having a disagreement with his fellow Upper Moon members, especially Douma. The main reason is their ideological differences: Akaza refuses to eat women, while women are Douma's favorite food. Akaza particularly enjoys fighting passionate individuals like Kyojuro, as his Compass Needle technique allows him to detect a person's presence by detecting their opponent's "Fighting Spirit."

Before becoming a Demon, he was a human named Soyama Hakuji. He became a student at a martial arts dojo while caring for the owner's daughter, Koyuki, who eventually became Hakuji's fiancée.

Muzan accidentally met Hakuji after he destroyed his rival's dojo as revenge for the actions of the people at the dojo who deliberately killed his fiancée and mentor. Muzan, attracted by Hakuji's aggressiveness, eventually transformed him into a demon named Akaza. After becoming a Demon, Akaza's memories slowly faded. However, thanks to his strong determination to protect Koyuki in the past, Akaza instilled in him the ideology that he would not eat women.Because of his deep love for Koyuki, all of Akaza's fighting techniques and Demon Blood Art refer to his fiancée.

His Compass Needle technique, which forms a snowflake, refers to Koyuki's hairpin and Koyuki's name, which means "snow."

His Demon Blood Art, which takes the form of fireworks, refers to his promise to Koyuki to take her to see fireworks.

Finally, the pattern on the back of Akaza's haori, upon closer inspection, forms the kanji for "snow," which refers to Koyuki's name.
